Consensus Statement on Thermal and Chemical Ablation of Thyroid Nodules and Neck Lesions
Thermal and chemical ablation techniques for the non-surgical treatment of thyroid nodules and neck lesions have been used internationally for decades, with only relatively recent interest and acceptance in the United States of America. This statement is intended to be an evolving document that provides a framework for the safe and effective practice of chemical and thermal ablation techniques for the management of thyroid nodules in the outpatient setting in the United States

Brazilian Consensus on the Application of Thermal Ablation for Treatment of Thyroid Nodules
There is increasing interest in ultrasound-guided ablation treatments for thyroid diseases, including benign and malignant ones. Surgeons, radiologists, and endocrinologists carry out these treatments, and various organizations within these specialties have recently released multiple international consensus statements and clinical practice standards. The aim of the present consensus statement is to provide guidance, cohesion, and standardization of best practices for thermal ablation procedures of thyroid nodules.
Taiwan clinical multicenter expert consensus and recommendations for thyroid radiofrequency ablation
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive management strategy that has been widely applied for benign and recurrent malignant thyroid lesions as an alternative to surgery in Taiwan. Members of academic societies for specialists in interventional radiology, endocrinology, and endocrine surgery collaborated to develop the first consensus regarding thyroid RFA in Taiwan.
General principles for the safe performance, training and adoption of ablation techniques for benign thyroid nodules: An American Thyroid Association Statement
This consensus statement is organized around three key themes: i. safety of ablation techniques and their implementation, ii. optimal skillset criteria for proceduralists performing ablative procedures, and iii. defining expectations of success for this treatment option given its unique risks and benefits.
Radiofrequency ablation and related ultrasound-guided ablation technologies for treatment of benign and malignant thyroid disease
The use of ultrasound-guided ablation procedures to treat both benign and malignant thyroid conditions is gaining increasing interest. This document has been developed as an international interdisciplinary evidence-based statement with a primary focus on radiofrequency ablation and is intended to serve as a manual for best practice application of ablation technologies.
Radiofrequency ablation of benign thyroid nodules: recommendations from the Asian Conference on Tumor Ablation Task Force
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a thermal ablation technique widely used for the management of benign thyroid nodules. To date, five academic societies in various countries have reported clinical practice guidelines, opinion statements, or recommendations regarding the use of thyroid RFA.
Expert consensus workshop report: Guidelines for thermal ablation of thyroid tumors
As a treatment option for cancer, thermal ablation has satisfactory effects on many types of solid tumors (such as liver and renal cancers). However, its clinical applications for the treatment of thyroid nodules and metastatic cervical lymph nodes are still under debate both in China and abroad. In 2015, the “Zhejiang Expert consensus on thermal ablation for thyroid benign nodules, microcarcinoma, and metastatic cervical lymph nodes (2015 edition),” was released by the Thyroid Cancer Committee of Zhejiang Anti-Cancer Association, China…
2020 European Thyroid Association Clinical Practice Guideline for the Use of Image-Guided Ablation in Benign Thyroid Nodules
Standard therapeutic approaches for benign thyroid lesions that warrant intervention are surgery for cold and either surgery or radioiodine for autonomously functioning thyroid nodules (AFTN). Image-guided thermal ablation (TA) procedures are increasingly proposed as therapy options for selected clinical conditions. Due to mounting scientific evidence and widening availability, ETA considered it appropriate to develop guidelines for the use of TA in adult patients….
Minimally-invasive treatments for benign thyroid nodules: a Delphi-based consensus statement from the Italian minimally-invasive treatments of the thyroid (MITT) group
Benign thyroid nodules are a common clinical occurrence and usually do not require treatment unless symptomatic. During the last years, ultrasound-guided minimally invasive treatments (MIT) gained an increasing role in the management of nodules causing local symptoms…
Radiofrequency ablation of thyroid nodules: “Good Clinical Practice Recommendations” for Austria
An interdisciplinary statement from the following professional associations: Austrian Thyroid Association (ÖSDG), Austrian Society for Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (OGNMB), Austrian Society for Endocrinology and Metabolism (ÖGES), Surgical Endocrinology Working Group (ACE) of the Austrian Surgical Society (OEGCH)
2017 Thyroid Radiofrequency Ablation Guideline: Korean Society of Thyroid Radiology
Thermal ablation using radiofrequency is a new, minimally invasive modality employed as an alternative to surgery in patients with benign thyroid nodules and recurrent thyroid cancers. The Task Force Committee of the Korean Society of Thyroid Radiology (KSThR) developed recommendations for the optimal use of radiofrequency ablation for thyroid tumors in 2012. As new meaningful evidences have accumulated, KSThR decided to revise the guidelines.
Ultrasound-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation for benign thyroid nodules
Evidence-based recommendations on ultrasound-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation for treating benign thyroid nodules in adults. This involves using heat energy to destroy tissue in the nodules.
European Thyroid Association and Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe 2021 Clinical Practice Guideline for the Use of Minimally Invasive Treatments in Malignant Thyroid Lesions
The growing detection of papillary thyroid microcarcinomas (PTMCs) is paralleled by an increase in surgical procedures. Due to the frequent indolent nature, cost, and risk of surgery, active surveillance (AS) and ultrasound-guided minimally invasive treatments (MITs) are in suitable cases of incidental PTMC proposed as alternatives to thyroidectomy.
2024 International Expert Consensus on US-guided Thermal Ablation for T1N0M0 Papillary Thyroid Cancer | Radiology
Thermal ablation has started to gain acceptance as a therapeutic approach for the management of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), mainly in the T1 stage (tumor size ≤ 2 cm in greatest dimension and limited to the thyroid).
